We perform 2 types of breathing tests in the office.
1. Spirometry
This test measures different lung values, like how much air you can exhale, and how quickly you can empty your lungs. To perform this test, you blow out as forcefully as possible into a mouthpiece attached to a recording device called a spirometer. Then you inhale as hard as possible. These measurements help us determine how well your lungs are functioning.
2. FeNO: Fractional exhaled Nitric Oxide
This test measures the amount of allergic swelling in your lungs. For this test, you exhale slowly but STEADILY for 10 seconds. Your goal is to keep a needle on the monitor within a stable range. This information helps us determine if allergies are causing your lungs to swell. We can use this test to determine the best dose of inhaled steroids.
