Nasal Smear

The body produces different types of cells in response to certain conditions.

  • Eosinophils: its response to allergies
  • Neutrophils: its response to bacterial infections
  • Lymphocytes: its response to viral infections

To obtain a sample of mucus, blow your nose into a Ziploc bag at home, or wax paper in our office. We apply this sample to a slide and stain this sample with chemicals. We then place the slide under a microscope where each type of cell has a unique appearance. By observing the cells, we can usually determine the cause of your nasal symptoms.
